R.E.S.E.T. – Read

Hello, hello, hello. Thank you for tuning in to another episode of The Zealous Disposition Podcast. Today I will be sharing what the R in R.E.S.E.T stands for. The R stands for Read or Reading.

I know many of us read on a regular basis but that doesn’t fit everyone.  Some of us only read what’s required of us…you know, the bare minimum…something for work or school.  That’s how I used to be…reading just enough to do the book report, essay, or homework assignment.  Let take a look at some ways reading can be more than the bare minimum.

Can reduce stress.  Reading a good book or a couple of articles from your favorite magazine can be a possible “get-away” for the daily stress that life may bring.  Your mind is stimulated when reading and it can kick in your visual imagination thus distracting you from your stressful situations.  And we all know that releasing stress can lead to relaxation.

You have the choice of reading what you want.  It could be Sci-Fi, Romance, Non-Fiction, History, and the list goes on.  Once you start reading whatever you’re drawn to…you get wrapped up in that world and release the daily stress.  You start to relax mentally and this leads to relaxing physically…which ultimately helps you fall asleep.  If reading your favorite genre excites you and keeps you up then find a semi-boring topic and that will definitely do the trick.  I know some of the military folks out there can attest to that.  Some of the doctrine I’ve read had me ready to go to sleep by the time I finished the first paragraph.

You can also learn a new subject which in turn could lead to meeting someone new.  Learning a new subject or building upon what you already know can lead to holding different conversations with someone new.  You’ll either be a newbie on the subject or you’ll be able to share insight on the topic.  Regardless on the two, you’ll be able to connect with others, gain their perspective, and grow as a person…you know what I always say… as iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another…sharpen yourself and sharpen those around you.  Staying sharp keeps the brain active…mentally fit, right?

Staying mentally fit aids in resiliency and reading can aid in bouncing back from shortfalls.  How did the character in you book bounce back?  What tips were outline in that self-help book?  What lessons were learned from your favorite historical figure?
So what do we have?  Reading can help…
1.       Reduce Stress
2.       Relaxation
3.       Help to fall asleep
4.       Gain new insight
5.       Keeps your brain active
6.       Aids in Flexibility aka Resiliency

The first step in R.E.S.E.T. is Read.  Start with reading something you enjoy…something new…something that peaks your interest for 15 minutes each day.  And if possible, use a paper based product.  If not, set your device to “Do Not Disturb” and enjoy your get-away time. So while you wait for the next step of R.E.S.E.T to be posted…get your read on and visit the website to let us know what book you’re reading.
